The Lauderdale County Commission in Florida agreed to order an environmental assessment on 16 acres of property in Florence-Lauderdale Industrial Park, which has been identified as a site for a new city-county animal shelter. An appraisal of the property indicates its value at $240,000. The property owner is willing to sell it to the county for $228,000. The County Commission has pledged a total of $3 million to build a new shelter.
After hearing the proposed site for a new animal shelter has an appraised value of more than the asking price, the Lauderdale County Commission is working to see whether the property is environmentally suitable for the new shelter, according to Timesdaily.com.
As a part of the agreement, if the appraisal came in more than $228,000, the price wouldn’t change. If the appraisal is lower, the price would be negotiated. County officials said the sale is contingent on an environmental assessment to make sure the shelter can be built there.
“What we need to know at this point is if we want Chris (Smith, county attorney) to proceed with getting the environmental assessment completed,” County Administrator Brenda Bryant told the commissioners during the work session after the regular meeting.
